She Took Her Eyes Off Him for Just a Second

She Took Her Eyes Off Him for Just a Second

They were supposed to be making memories. Not near-misses.

It was their first proper family holiday since having kids.
Nothing extravagant. Just a small coastal town, a rented cottage, and the promise of slow mornings and sandy toes.

The baby was teething, the toddler was overtired, and they’d forgotten the travel cot. But even with the chaos, she was trying to soak it all in.

This was meant to be one of those trips.
The kind they’d look back on with laughter. Firsts and freckles. Fish and chips on the beach. Sticky hands and tired giggles.

On the third day, the sun finally came out.

They’d just returned from the beach, arms full of towels, buckets, and half the shoreline.
Everyone was sandy and sleepy in that soft, golden way that only happens after a day spent near the sea.

She ran a bath for the kids while her partner rinsed out clothes on the patio.
The toddler had been curled up on the sofa, watching cartoons, eyes droopy.

Or so she thought.

It couldn’t have been more than a minute.

She came back into the lounge with a towel, expecting to see him still there.
But he wasn’t.

Her breath caught. That heavy stillness settled into her chest.

She called his name. No response.
She checked the hallway. The bathroom. The bedroom.

Then she noticed the front door.
It was open. Just a little.

And her heart dropped.

She found him two cottages down, barefoot, holding a seashell.

He was chatting away to a stranger, bright-eyed and proud.
“I’m going back to the beach,” he said.

She scooped him up, holding him tighter than he wanted, whispering it’s okay over and over while her heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear anything else.

He didn’t understand.
But she did.

She could see every terrible possibility. Every close call that didn’t happen. This time.

She didn’t sleep that night.

She lay awake, watching him breathe, going over it all again and again.
How he must have seen them open the lock.
How quickly he’d learned.
How there wasn’t a bolt out of his reach.

And how fragile it all suddenly felt.

She hadn’t done anything wrong. She wasn’t distracted.
She was just a mother. Doing her best.

But even the best parents can’t see everything, every second.

That was when it hit her.

Holidays don’t come with childproofing.

Every cottage, hotel, or Airbnb brings unknowns.
Unfamiliar doors. Sharp corners. Low windows. Loose drawers.
Things you don’t even notice until your child finds them first.

And then you’re left reacting, when all you want is to relax.

That trip changed everything for her.

Because the truth is, it’s not about being paranoid. It’s about being prepared.
It’s about knowing that in the middle of a break that’s meant to bring joy, you don’t also need to carry the full weight of worry.

So she created the Child Safety Package.

Not just for home.
But for away.
For weekends at Grandma’s, quick getaways, long holidays, even day trips.

It’s a lightweight, compact kit full of the essentials.
Outlet covers. Drawer and cupboard locks. Corner bumpers. Door pinch guards.
All designed to install quickly and travel easily.

There’s also a clear, simple checklist included to help spot hazards in any new space.
And just as important, every order comes with a free child safety bracelet.
Something small but powerful.
Something that could make all the difference if your child ever wanders in a busy place.

Now, she packs it as instinctively as nappies and snacks.

Because peace of mind doesn’t weigh much.
But it’s everything

Let them explore.
Let yourself breathe.
And make every trip a little safer, without giving up the freedom and joy of the moment.
